24-Year-Old Fined RM10,000 For Posting Obscene Video On X

Date:

A public university student was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court today for producing and initiating the transmission of obscene video content via his X (formerly Twitter) account.

Judge Suhaila Haron handed down the sentence on Muhammad Aidil Akmal Azhar, 24, after he pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him. The court also ordered a four-month jail term if he fails to pay the fine.

According to the charge, he knowingly produced and transmitted an obscene video with the intent to annoy others using the X platform at 10:45pm on March 1, 2024, in Shah Alam, Selangor. The post was viewed at a condominium here at 11am on April 4 last year.

He was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, punishable under Section 233(3) of the same Act.

Deputy Public Prosecutor from MCMC, Fadhli Ab Wahab, urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence, stressing that obscene content on social media has serious implications for the nation, particularly on youth, who are easily exposed to such material.

He added that there has been a sharp rise in cases of transmitting obscene communications online.

Defence lawyer Nurshah Kamarudin pleaded for leniency, saying her client had no prior convictions, regretted his actions, and promised not to repeat the offence.
