A man was found drowned, floating in the Perak River near a sand dredging vessel about 800 metres from where he was reported to have fallen at a ship repair workshop in Batu 8, Jalan Maharajalela, Teluk Intan, roughly 88 kilometres away, tonight.
The victim, identified as Neoh Jun Jie, 24, worked as a tyre fastener on a cargo vessel. He is believed to have fallen into the river while installing tyres on the side of a vessel under repair, about 10 metres from the riverbank.
Perak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) acting assistant director of operations Shazlean Mohd Hanafiah said they received information from a fisherman about the discovery of the victim’s body at 9.18pm.
“The victim was successfully brought to shore at 9.58pm and handed over to the police for further action. The operation was placed under control at 9.50pm and ended fully at 10.40pm,” he said in a statement tonight.
He added that the department received a call about the incident at 4.20pm yesterday and began the search and rescue (SAR) operation at 4.41pm.
“However, the SAR operation had to be suspended at 7.15pm yesterday before resuming at 8am today. Measures included diving by the Water Rescue Team (PPDA), using the LAST concept, and surface water searches,” he said.
