74-Year-Old Woman Dies After Falling Into Drainage Canal Despite Husband’s Rescue Attempt

Date:

A heartbreaking incident occurred in Changhua City this morning when a couple in their 70s fell into a drainage canal, leaving the 74-year-old wife dead and her husband critically injured. The tragedy unfolded at the Yangcuo drainage canal on Huanhe Street. The wife accidentally fell into the water, and her husband immediately jumped in to save her, putting his own life at risk.

Witnesses recalled trying to stop the husband from jumping, but he was determined to reach his wife. Firefighter Wang Guanqiang explained that the canal is about the width of a small stream and roughly six to seven meters deep, making the rescue extremely challenging.

Emergency responders arrived quickly, using boats and rescue equipment to save both victims. The wife was rescued from the center of the canal, while the husband was pulled from the edge. Both were initially unresponsive and rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, the wife was pronounced dead at noon. The husband regained a heartbeat and blood pressure and is now under observation in the intensive care unit.

According to reports, the couple had arrived at the canal riding motorcycles. Although the canal has safety railings along its banks, the exact circumstances of how the wife fell remain under investigation.

The husband’s selfless act of risking his life to save his wife highlights a profound bond of love and devotion. While the outcome was tragic, his courage and determination in a moment of crisis have deeply moved witnesses and the community alike.
