A bomb disposal unit was deployed to an airport in Australia after a suspicious object discovered during security screening turned out to be a laser hair removal device.
The incident occurred at Avalon Airport on May 21, prompting a partial evacuation of the airport during the early hours of the morning.
According to Victoria Police, the suspicious item was detected while luggage was being screened, triggering emergency security protocols and the deployment of the Bomb Response Unit.
“Checks were conducted on the item and it was later identified as a laser hair removal device,” police said in a statement to AFP.
Acting Inspector Nick Uebergang said the device, along with a container of hot chocolate powder, had been left on a conveyor belt while authorities investigated the situation.
He added that the owner of the bag was initially uncooperative with officers, making the investigation more difficult.
“The person who had the bag wasn’t too cooperative with us to start off with, which complicated matters slightly,” he said.
The scare caused several flights to be delayed or cancelled as security teams carried out checks around the affected area.
However, no charges were filed against the individual involved, and airport operations later returned to normal after authorities confirmed there was no threat.
