Chinese Passenger Thinks RM And Yuan Are Equal, Shocked After Learning 100 Yuan Is Not Worth RM100

Date:

A Chinese passenger on an AirAsia flight from China to Malaysia reportedly caused confusion onboard after mistakenly believing the Chinese yuan and Malaysian ringgit shared a 1:1 exchange rate.

According to a viral social media post, the incident happened when the passenger purchased bottled water during the flight.

The water reportedly cost RM8, and the man paid using 100 yuan, equivalent to around RM58 based on current exchange rates.

After converting the currency, a flight attendant returned RM44 in change to the passenger.

However, the man allegedly became unhappy and questioned why he only received RM44 instead of RM82, apparently assuming that 100 yuan should directly equal RM100.

Cabin crew were then forced to explain that the exchange rate between the Chinese yuan and Malaysian ringgit was not equal, and that 100 yuan was only worth around RM58.

Only after the explanation did the passenger reportedly realise his mistake and accept the situation.

The incident quickly became a topic of discussion online, with many netizens expressing disbelief over the misunderstanding involving foreign currency exchange rates.

Some users pointed out that travellers should familiarise themselves with exchange rates before flying overseas, while others criticised the passenger for confidently arguing despite being mistaken.

Others also noted that purchasing items onboard an aircraft using foreign currency would typically involve less favourable exchange rates compared to regular money changers on the ground.

The viral story has since sparked humorous reactions online, with many joking that the passenger received an “unexpected economics lesson” mid-flight.
