A man and a woman died after their car fell hundreds of feet from a cliff in Brazil, in what authorities believe happened during an intimate moment inside the vehicle.
The victims were identified as Marcone da Silva Cardoso, 26, and Adriana Machado Ribeiro, 42. According to officials, the pair had attended a party on Monday, Aug. 4, in Venda Nova do Imigrante, and later drove to a scenic overlook near a hang-gliding ramp.
Local police told CNN Brazil and The Sun that movement inside the car — possibly during sexual activity — may have caused the vehicle to roll forward and plunge off the edge. The ground was reportedly wet, and although the car’s handbrake was engaged, it is believed the shifting weight caused it to tip over the cliff.
Residents reported hearing a loud crash between 1:30 a.m. and 2 a.m., but thick vegetation and darkness prevented anyone from seeing the accident. A caretaker discovered the wreckage later that morning.
When authorities arrived, both victims were found naked at the base of the cliff, about 328 feet below, with car parts scattered in the surrounding vegetation. There were no signs of foul play, and investigators believe no one else was involved.
Witness Tiago Amorim described the aftermath as “a shocking scene,” saying the car was completely destroyed and its engine had landed far from the main wreckage.
Ribeiro was the mother of two children, while Cardoso had a four-year-old son. Forensic reports are still pending as the investigation continues.
