A couple who were preparing to marry on December 25 were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a ravine along Kilometre 52 of Jalan Kuala Jeneris–Sungai Gawi–Aring (Bukit Kawah) yesterday.
Hulu Terengganu district police chief Supt Sharudin Abdul Wahab identified the victims as 52-year-old Hassan Shazali from Kampung Menanti, Melor, Kelantan, a teacher at SK Lebir, and 34-year-old Suzaimah Che Azis from Gua Musang, a canteen worker at the same school.
Police received a call around 5.30pm reporting that a Toyota Fortuner SUV had skidded before plunging into a ravine about 200 feet below. Preliminary findings suggest the couple were travelling from Hulu Terengganu towards Gua Musang when they unknowingly entered a closed stretch of road affected by a landslide, causing the driver to lose control.
The impact threw both victims out of the vehicle, and they were pronounced dead at the scene. Their bodies were taken to Hulu Terengganu Hospital’s forensics unit for post-mortem examination.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
