A delivery rider has been charged in court for allegedly robbing a 71-year-old woman after using customers’ cash-on-delivery (COD) payments to gamble and invest in foreign exchange, ultimately losing all the money.
The 30-year-old suspect, identified as Mohammad Shahrul, is accused of committing the robbery on the morning of August 14 at around 8:45am in front of a house on Jalan Lalang, Ladang Disaud Shani Bah. He allegedly snatched the victim’s gold necklace and RM31 in cash.
Mohammad Shahrul faces charges under Section 392 of the Penal Code for robbery, which carries a maximum sentence of 14 years’ imprisonment, as well as fines or caning. He pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him by an interpreter.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohammad Rifil requested RM10,000 bail, but the defense highlighted that Mohammad Shahrul’s wife had just completed chemotherapy and his mother was unwell, asking the court to consider a lower bail amount.
After hearing both sides, the judge granted bail at RM7,000, with the condition that the suspect reports to a nearby police station every month. The case has been fixed for a hearing on September 23, and the suspect has been instructed to provide documents and appoint a lawyer.
Earlier reports stated that on the day of the incident, the elderly woman was watering her plants when a man in a Proton Iriz approached, claiming he was delivering a COD order, before robbing her. The suspect was arrested and remanded for six days to assist in the investigation.
