A 20-year-old disabled man believed to have learning difficulties has died after he was allegedly assaulted and left by the roadside in Kampung Padang Lati.
The victim, identified as Muhammad Zakir Fikry Mohd Zainal, was found in critical condition by villagers at around 7.30am yesterday before being rushed to the Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (HPUSM) in Kubang Kerian, where he later died at about midnight while receiving treatment in the red zone.
A witness, 60-year-old Mohd Yusof Shafie, said he was alerted by a villager about a road incident and rushed to the scene immediately.
“Upon arrival, I saw the victim was still alive but in a critical condition with severe head injuries and blood covering his face,” he said.
He added that the situation appeared suspicious as the motorcycle involved showed no signs of major damage, despite the victim suffering serious injuries.
“From his appearance, I could tell he was not from this village, although some locals later recognised him as someone from a nearby area,” he said when met at the scene.
Mohd Yusof also said he was shocked by news of the victim’s death but had suspected the severity of his injuries from the beginning.
Meanwhile, Bachok district police chief Superintendent Mohamad Ismail Jamaluddin confirmed that a report had been received regarding the incident.
He said the victim’s body was sent to Hospital Raja Perempuan Zainab II (HRPZ II) in Kota Bharu for a post-mortem examination.
The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
