An 80-year-old man has lost RM103,850 after falling victim to an online investment scam that began in August last year.
Kuching District Police Chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the victim had been in contact with a woman via WhatsApp, who claimed to be operating a business in Pattaya, Thailand.
The suspect allegedly convinced the victim to participate in a so-called “Wholesale International Business Online” investment scheme through a website she managed.
The victim was then instructed to make multiple payments, with promises that both the capital and profits would be credited back into his account.
Between September 2025 and February this year, the victim made eight transactions to six different bank accounts, amounting to RM103,850 in total.
He only realised he had been scammed after he was unable to contact the suspect.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.
Police have since reminded the public to be cautious of online investment offers, especially those promoted through social media platforms.
Authorities also advised the public to verify investment schemes through Bank Negara Malaysia and the Securities Commission before making any financial commitments.
Members of the public are urged to contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) at 997 if they suspect fraudulent activity.
