Facebook Account Admin Jailed 10 Months, Fined RM50,000 For Insulting Islam

Date:

The Sessions Court today handed a 10-month prison sentence and a RM50,000 fine to the administrator of the Facebook account “Bat Tuo Sai” for posting highly offensive comments insulting Islam.

The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) stated that the remarks, made on Astro Awani’s Facebook page, pertained to the passing of former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

The accused, identified as 48-year-old John Mule anak Alai, was charged under Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (Act 588) for misusing an application service to upload communications intended to cause distress.

MCMC reminded the public not to exploit digital platforms to insult religion, provoke hatred, or disrupt social harmony and emphasised that strict legal action will be taken against offenders.
