Families of 30 Killed in High-Speed Rail Crane Collapse Receive Compensation

Families of the 30 victims killed when parts of a launching gantry fell onto a moving passenger train at a high-speed rail construction site received compensation of about MYR 201,000 per victim at a ceremony at Government House on Jan 20.

The handover took place at the Santi Maitree Building in Bangkok and was presided over by Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.

Korat Crane Collapse: What Happened

The fatal incident occurred on Jan 14 in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima, when metal components forming the base of a launching gantry fell onto a Bangkok–Ubon Ratchathani passenger train. The Transport Ministry confirmed on Jan 19 that 29 passengers and one construction worker were killed.

Compensation Package (approx. in MYR)

Each victim’s family received a total of MYR 201,000, broken down as:

  • State Railway of Thailand support: MYR 45,000
  • Insurance compensation from Dhipaya Insurance: MYR 134,000
  • Assistance from the contractor: MYR 20,000

Government Response

Mr. Anutin expressed his deepest condolences, calling the tragedy a devastating loss that shocked the nation. He said the compensation handover reflected the government’s intention to expedite support and remedies for affected families.

The Office of Insurance Commission and other agencies helped ensure that the compensation reached families promptly. Mr. Anutin added that the government would continue monitoring the process until all procedures were completed.
