Police have seized a shotgun believed to have been used in an incident involving Menteri Besar Perlis, Abu Bakar Hamzah, during a sacrificial programme in Kuala Perlis last Thursday.
Kangar district police chief ACP Yusharifuddin Mohd Yusop said the seizure also included nine rounds of buckshot to assist ongoing investigations.
He said the Menteri Besar’s statement had been recorded following the incident, which went viral on social media after a report was lodged by a member of the public.
According to preliminary findings, the action was taken after a sacrificial bull was believed to have acted aggressively and posed a threat to participants and members of the public at the event.
Police confirmed that checks with the licensing division of the Kangar district police headquarters showed that the Menteri Besar holds a valid firearms licence for the weapon involved.
The case is being investigated under Section 39 of the Firearms Act 1960 for discharging a firearm in a public place.
ACP Yusharifuddin also reminded the public not to speculate or make provocative statements that could affect public order while investigations are ongoing.
He added that police take such incidents seriously and will not hesitate to take firm action against any party found to have violated the law.
