A male Form Six student was found drowned in Sungai Padas near the Pangi Hydroelectric Dam here on Tuesday.
The victim, identified as 19-year-old Muhamad Alif Lukman Bujang, was discovered floating in the river by auxiliary police officers at around 6.50am before the incident was reported to the authorities.
Tenom acting district police chief Ahmad Razali Shaari said police received a report regarding the discovery of the teenager’s body at the location.
“Following the information received, a team from the Tenom police station was dispatched to the scene and proceeded to retrieve the body before it was taken to the hospital for further action,” he said when contacted by Sinar Harian.
He added that further checks were carried out following the discovery, including reviewing previous reports lodged with the police.
“Investigations found that a report had been made regarding a student leaving the hostel of a secondary school in the district at around 7am on Monday.
“The report was lodged by a male hostel warden and identification based on the clothing found on the body matched the school uniform of the student,” he said.
According to Ahmad Razali, investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death, while the body will be transported to a hospital in Kota Kinabalu for a post-mortem examination.
“At this stage, the cause of death has yet to be determined. However, preliminary examinations at the scene and at the hospital by medical officers found no injuries linked to criminal elements,” he said.
