A former post office counter clerk was sentenced to a total of 22 years’ imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court after pleading guilty to 52 charges of criminal breach of trust (CBT) involving unauthorised withdrawals from Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) accounts.
Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the sentence on Amirudin Hasra Hassan, 35, after weighing the seriousness of the offences and public interest considerations.
Amirudin is facing 199 charges under Section 408 of the Penal Code. Apart from the 52 charges he admitted to in this case, he has also pleaded guilty to another 48 charges, with sentencing scheduled before another Sessions Court on Jan 22, 2026.
He has claimed trial to the remaining 99 CBT charges, which are being heard separately before two other Sessions Court judges. Case management and trial dates have been fixed in January 2026.
According to the case facts, an internal review by the Lundu Post Office of withdrawal transactions between January 2024 and January 2025 uncovered numerous suspicious ASB withdrawals. Investigations revealed that Amirudin, who was then working as a counter staff member, had carried out transactions ranging from RM500 to RM5,000 without the knowledge or presence of the account holders.
The withdrawals involved ASB accounts belonging to 12 victims aged between 50 and over 80 years old. Closed-circuit television footage confirmed that the transactions were conducted without the investors being present.
An audit report showed that a total of 199 unauthorised withdrawals amounting to RM654,300 were made using Amirudin’s teller identification.
The prosecution was led by several deputy public prosecutors, while Amirudin was unrepresented in court.
