The government has mobilised all relevant agencies to clamp down on syndicates producing fake MyKads, following reports of foreigners using forged identity cards.
Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the ministry is employing all existing legal provisions to investigate the possession of counterfeit MyKads, as well as the misuse of genuine identity documents belonging to others.
The move comes after a recent joint enforcement operation at an electronics factory in Telok Panglima Garang, Selangor, where several foreigners were found using forged documents.
“The investigation is comprehensive, covering the entire ecosystem behind this activity, including labour supply agents, recruitment processes, and documentation management. We are applying all available legal procedures to ensure this activity is fully eradicated,” he said.
Saifuddin noted that a key priority is identifying the source of the forged MyKads, which reportedly sell for RM300 each. He explained that National Registration Department (NRD) officers use specialised devices to instantly verify document authenticity against the national database.
“If the system shows no record, the document is confirmed as fake. As the guardian of national data, NRD has the most accurate records,” he added.
The minister said the investigation, now in its third day, is tracing the syndicate’s network and initial points of contact. He stressed that document forgery poses a serious threat, especially as the government rolls out targeted subsidies to ensure public funds reach only eligible citizens.
Saifuddin also said he will chair a meeting with the Human Resources Ministry later this month to discuss additional measures to detect the misuse of identity cards.
In Wednesday’s integrated operation, officials from the NRD, Immigration Department, and Labour Department intercepted foreigners using fake MyKads purchased for RM300.
Earlier, Saifuddin attended a handover ceremony at the Kulim Hi-Tech Park Business Centre, where he presented documents to 35 contractors involved in the Mesra Rakyat Project in Kulim and Bandar Baharu. The RM2.3 million project includes home repairs and infrastructure maintenance, covering repairs to 10 houses in Kulim and three in Bandar Baharu, as well as 17 infrastructure projects in Kulim and five in Bandar Baharu.
