A 33-year-old unemployed man was arrested after his reckless high-speed driving on a highway led police to uncover a major drug trafficking activity involving ecstasy worth nearly RM600,000.
Alor Gajah district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Abu Bakar said the suspect was detained on the Pedas–Ayer Keroh Expressway after officers noticed the driver behaving suspiciously while travelling at high speed.
A further inspection of the Proton S70 he was driving uncovered a large quantity of drugs hidden inside a black bag placed on the rear seat.
Police believe the seized ecstasy could supply an estimated 13,147 users in the local market.
Investigations revealed the suspect had allegedly been active in drug distribution for about five months and was believed to be transporting drugs to southern areas for the first time.
Despite initially passing a urine screening test, police checks showed the man had four prior drug-related offences, including cases under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and preventive laws linked to drug offences.
Authorities confirmed that the suspect is now under seven-day remand to assist investigations under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
If convicted, he faces the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment. If the death sentence is not imposed, the law also provides for whipping of not less than 15 strokes.
