Widower Jailed Seven Months For Threatening To Slaughter Mother Over Mobile Phone Dispute

Date:

A Magistrate’s Court in Yong Peng on Tuesday sentenced a 36-year-old widower to seven months’ imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to criminal intimidation against his elderly mother and possession of stolen copper cables.

The accused, Johari Ramlan, who works as a scrap collector, admitted to both charges after they were read before Magistrate Arun Noval Dass.

For the first offence, Johari was charged with criminally intimidating his 74-year-old mother by threatening to slaughter her. The incident took place at a house in Kampung Kelichap, Senggarang, at about 9am on April 2. The charge was framed under Section 506 of the Penal Code.

According to the case facts, the accused became enraged after his mother refused to allow him to use her mobile phone. During the altercation, he hurled threats at her, an incident witnessed by his sister-in-law. Fearing for her safety and that of her family, the victim subsequently lodged a police report.

In a separate charge, Johari was found in possession of copper wires believed to have been stolen from an abandoned house along Jalan Sungai Suluh Besar, Senggarang, at approximately 3.20pm on April 17. The offence falls under Section 29(1) of the Minor Offences Act 1955, which carries a penalty of up to one year’s imprisonment or a fine of up to RM1,000.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Firdaus Ruslan led the prosecution, while the accused was represented by lawyer Tan Song Yan from the National Legal Aid Foundation (YBGK).

The court handed down a sentence of four months’ jail for the intimidation charge and three months for possession of stolen property, to run concurrently from the date of arrest on April 16.
