Housewife Fined RM1,000 for Broom Attack After TikTok Insult

Date:

A 50-year-old housewife, K. Mahaletchimy, was fined RM1,000 by the Magistrate’s Court after admitting to assaulting a man with a broom following insulting remarks he allegedly made about her during a TikTok livestream last month.

Magistrate Shahril handed down the sentence after she pleaded guilty to the charge. She was ordered to serve one month in prison if she failed to pay the fine.

According to the charge sheet, the offence took place at about 7.30pm on July 5 at a security guard post in a primary school in Puchong. Mahaletchimy was accused of intentionally causing injury to a 24-year-old man by hitting him with a broom, in violation of Section 323 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.

Case details revealed that, upset over disparaging remarks made about her during a livestream, she confronted the victim and struck his left arm with a broom. When the victim tried to flee, she chased him and hit him again. The incident was caught on CCTV.

She was arrested on July 30 in the Seri Kembangan area by Serdang district police investigators.

Her lawyer, Mohamad Mokri, from the National Legal Aid Foundation, pleaded for leniency, noting that Mahaletchimy was a first-time offender who had cooperated fully, pleaded guilty early, and expressed remorse. She was also detained for two days during the investigation.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Leong Hui urged the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a deterrent.

After the proceedings, Mahaletchimy told reporters she had acted out of frustration and felt her dignity had been attacked by the victim’s remarks.

“It was about my dignity. What he said was unbearable,” she said.
