‘I Just Want To Grow Up And Leave’: Child’s Heartbreaking Post About Parents’ Divorce Moves Malaysia

Date:

A deeply personal story shared by a netizen to Xuan’s facebook page has gone viral after detailing the struggles of growing up amid parental conflict and financial hardship.

In the letter, the writer – the eldest of three siblings – recounts how their mother initiated the divorce, citing the father’s failure to provide financially. According to the mother, leaving would allow her to claim child support through the courts. The children followed their mother when she moved out of the family home.

Soon after, however, the mother began a new relationship. The writer says their mother now frequently prioritises her boyfriend over her children, even inviting him to stay overnight and telling them he is “better” than their father because he can bring her happiness.

When the father found out about the boyfriend, he stopped providing financial support, saying that since the new partner was “better,” he should take responsibility for the children’s living expenses. This triggered further arguments between the parents, eventually leading to the mother filing a lawsuit for unpaid child support.

The young writer describes feeling heartbroken and stressed, unable to focus on schoolwork. “When my mother said life would get better after the divorce, it didn’t. Now my father doesn’t give me living expenses, and my mother has no stable job. It’s hard to even ask for money for tuition,” the letter reads.

The writer also expressed resentment toward the mother’s boyfriend, who “only takes her to eat, drink, have fun and stay at hotels.” When they voiced their dissatisfaction, the mother allegedly responded with physical punishment.

“I want to grow up quickly. When I’m 18, I’ll leave this home and never come back. I don’t want to see this broken family anymore,” the letter concludes.

The post has sparked hundreds of comments from netizens, many expressing sympathy and calling for more support systems for children caught in parental conflicts. Others praised the radio station for giving a platform to voices often unheard in family disputes.
