A family dispute over inherited land took a tragic turn in Kampar, Riau, when a man fatally stabbed his own younger brother following an argument in Desa Sendayan last Friday.
The suspect, 49-year-old Ahmad Kholis, said he regretted his actions after killing his 43-year-old brother, Risman Riyanto, around 7 p.m. local time.
According to Kompas.com, initial investigations revealed the fight started when Risman asked Ahmad to sign documents finalizing the boundary lines for their parents’ inherited land.
“The inheritance was divided between us — we’re the only two sons. He came to my stall asking me to sign the boundary papers. I told him it should be done properly, not just by digging a small trench,” Ahmad told police after his arrest.
The argument quickly escalated when Ahmad refused to sign. Risman allegedly attacked him with a knife, injuring his abdomen, head, and arm. A local resident, Nurman, tried to intervene but failed as the younger brother continued the assault.
In an attempt to defend himself, Ahmad grabbed a machete, leading to a violent struggle that ended with Risman’s death at the scene due to severe injuries.
“I was only defending myself,” Ahmad said, now in custody at Kampar Police Station.
Kampar Criminal Investigation Chief, AKP Gian Wiatma Jonimandala, confirmed that the fatal altercation stemmed from a family land dispute.
“This fight between two brothers ended in tragedy, leaving one dead. The suspect is currently being held for further investigation,” he said.
The victim’s body has been released to his family for burial.
The shocking case once again highlights how inheritance disputes can destroy families, turning brotherly bonds into fatal confrontations.
