Italy Demands Action After “Non-Authentic” Carbonara Appears in Supermarket

Date:

Italy has called for an immediate investigation after jars of “carbonara” sauce made in Belgium were spotted on sale at a supermarket inside the European Parliament, igniting outrage over what officials describe as a violation of culinary tradition.

Carbonara, a revered Italian dish, is typically prepared moments before serving, made with pasta, egg yolks, guanciale (pork jowl), pecorino and black pepper. So when a pale, creamy sauce labeled “carbonara” — containing smoked pancetta instead of guanciale — appeared in Brussels, Italy’s agriculture minister Francesco Lollobrigida denounced the product as an “unacceptable” imitation.

The sauce, produced by Belgian company Delhaize, does not claim Italian origin but is accused of breaching authenticity standards. “All these products represent the worst of Italian-sounding products,” Lollobrigida wrote on Facebook. “I’ve asked for an immediate investigation.”

The incident arrives at a sensitive time for Italy, which is seeking UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition for its cuisine in December. According to Lollobrigida, imitation products dilute the integrity of Italian culture. Coldiretti, Italy’s largest agricultural lobby, estimates that fake “Italian-style” products worldwide cost the nation €120 billion annually.

The European Parliament has since removed the controversial jars from its shelves, though Delhaize has not commented.

This is not the first time carbonara has caused an international stir. In 2023, Heinz faced backlash in Italy for selling canned “spaghetti carbonara” made with pancetta, prompting online comparisons to pet food. Meanwhile, historian Alberto Grandi sparked debate by suggesting that both pizza and carbonara were shaped by Italian immigrants in the United States.

Grandi argues that UNESCO recognition would celebrate cultural tradition rather than strict recipes. “The question is philosophical, not gastronomical,” he said.

With Italian identity and cuisine at the heart of the discussion, the carbonara dispute has become more than a matter of taste — it’s now a question of heritage and national pride.
