An unmarried couple was detained for allegedly committing khalwat (close proximity) during an early-morning raid by the Johor Islamic Religious Department (JAINJ) last week.
According to a JAINJ Facebook post, the raid was conducted at a two-storey terrace house at about 2.30am following a public complaint. Officers reportedly knocked on the door of one bedroom for several minutes before it was opened by a woman in her 20s, who was dressed in shorts and a T-shirt.
As the room was dimly lit, officers used flashlights to locate and switch on the lights. They then found a man lying naked under a blanket on the bed. He was later given a towel to cover himself.
Further inspection revealed a strong odour in the room, with several used condoms found scattered around the area, including under the bed.
When questioned, the couple claimed they were friends with no family relationship. The man, who works in Johor Bahru, later admitted that he had been in a relationship with the woman and had been renting the room for RM500 a month.
According to the complaint, the man was believed to have frequented the house previously and was also found to have rented another room about 10km away. He was said to visit the premises late at night using a motorcycle to avoid detection.
The couple told officers they planned to get married. Both were subsequently arrested and taken to the police station for further investigation.
