A Sessions Court here sentenced a man believed to be a runner for an illegal moneylending syndicate to six years in prison after he admitted to firebombing the house of an elderly man last month.
Judge Osman Affendi Mohd Shalleh handed down the sentence to Mohamed Hanaffi Ahmad, 32, after the accused pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 436 of the Penal Code.
The latest sentence is the second prison term imposed on the accused after the Segamat Sessions Court sentenced him to five-and-a-half years in jail last month for a separate Molotov cocktail attack that also resulted in a house fire.
The court ordered both sentences to run consecutively, bringing the total jail term to 11 years and six months.
According to the charge, the father of three threw a Molotov cocktail at a house belonging to a 62-year-old man in Taman Nagaria, Senggarang, at around 5.16pm on April 11.
Based on the case facts, the victim lodged a police report after discovering burn marks at the parking area while visiting his rented property.
Police later arrested the accused together with his wife in Bandar Putra, Kulai, with authorities believing the woman was also involved in the case.
Investigators also recovered a video recording from the wife’s mobile phone allegedly showing the accused throwing a Molotov cocktail towards the victim’s house.
Further investigations revealed that the accused was allegedly paid between RM200 and RM300 for each house targeted in the attacks.
During court proceedings, the court was also shown video footage of the accused placing a mobile phone on the roadside before carrying out the act.
The prosecution was conducted by deputy public prosecutor Sharifah Natasha Syed Ahmad.
The accused was unrepresented during the proceedings.
