A Malaysian woman has touched hearts online after revealing how a mixed rice stall owner secretly provided her with free meals for two years following the death of her mother.
What made the story even more emotional was that she only discovered the truth eight years later.
In an anonymous online confession, the woman shared that she grew up in a single-parent family and was mainly raised by her grandmother while her mother worked to support the household.
However, tragedy struck when she was just 10 years old after her mother passed away due to illness, leaving her and her elderly grandmother struggling financially.
According to the woman, her retired grandmother was forced to return to work to support her schooling, while the pair often survived on instant noodles because of financial hardship.
One afternoon after school, the young girl wandered around a nearby food court hoping to buy something to eat.
She eventually stopped at a mixed rice stall after being drawn by the smell of freshly cooked food, but quickly realised she only had RM2 in her pocket.
Disappointed, she walked away quietly before the stall owner suddenly called out to her.
The hawker allegedly told the girl that her late mother had left money with him before passing away and assured her she could continue eating at the stall by deducting the cost from the amount supposedly left behind.
Hungry and confused, the girl accepted the offer and enjoyed her meal.
Even after eating, the stall owner reportedly refused to accept payment from her and even allowed her to pack food home for her grandmother.
From that day onward, the stall became part of her daily life, with the woman saying she ate there almost every day for the next two years.
Whenever she worried about the “money” running out, the hawker would reassure her there was still plenty remaining.
The woman later moved away in 2014 to live with her biological father, although she admitted she was reluctant to leave because her grandmother had been the one who truly raised her.
Years later, at the age of 18, she returned to the neighbourhood and visited the stall again, hoping to meet the owner who had cared for her during one of the darkest periods of her life.
Instead, she was greeted by the hawker’s wife, who informed her that the man had passed away a year after she left the area.
During their conversation, the woman finally learned the heartbreaking truth — her mother had never left any money behind.
The stall owner had simply heard about her family’s situation from regular customers and, after seeing her staring longingly at the food that day, decided to help in secret so the young girl would not feel embarrassed or guilty.
The woman ended her confession by expressing gratitude to the late hawker for giving a struggling child the chance to enjoy warm meals during a difficult chapter of her life.
