A reduced year-end bonus is believed to have triggered a fatal confrontation between a Tokyo sales manager and his boss, an incident now under police investigation as a homicide case.
Japanese authorities arrested 45-year-old Masahiro Yamanaka on suspicion of killing his superior, 44-year-old company president Akihiro Kawashima, at Kawashima’s apartment in Ota Ward. The incident is believed to have occurred between the evening of Jan 7 and the morning of Jan 8.
During police questioning, Yamanaka reportedly admitted to confronting Kawashima at his apartment, claiming he had only intended to threaten him and did not mean to kill him. Investigators said Kawashima appeared to have tried to defend himself during the attack.
A fruit knife believed to have been brought from Yamanaka’s home was recovered at the scene, along with blood-stained footprints found inside the apartment and along an emergency stairway.
Investigators are focusing on a possible financial motive after Yamanaka told police his year-end bonus had been reduced without explanation. He reportedly said the bonus was cut from the equivalent of one and a half months’ salary to one month’s salary. A pay slip reflecting the reduced amount was found at his residence.
Yamanaka is also said to have expressed long-standing dissatisfaction with workplace management and his boss’s attitude, telling investigators that he felt words alone would not change the situation.
Security camera footage showed Yamanaka leaving his home in the late afternoon, entering Kawashima’s apartment building shortly before 6pm, and leaving around two hours later. Footage suggested he changed clothes before and after the incident. Investigators believe he later met a friend for dinner and visited several bars before being intercepted by police the next day at Tokyo Station as he headed toward a Shinkansen platform.
Japanese media reported that the two men had known each other since high school and maintained a close relationship for years. Kawashima had invited Yamanaka to join his company four years ago and was said to have supported him during major life events, including his wedding.
Following the arrest, Yamanaka’s mother issued a public apology, describing her son as gentle and non-violent. She said he should have left his job if he was struggling and acknowledged that Kawashima’s life could never be restored.
Police said investigations are ongoing to determine whether the attack was premeditated and whether the bonus dispute was the main motive.
