A 71-year-old man has been brought before the Magistrate’s Court today on charges of allegedly shooting three individuals at a restaurant in Taman Kota Jaya on April 19.
The accused, Lim Lian, was seen nodding in understanding after all three charges were read out to him in Mandarin before Magistrate Nurkhalida Farhana Abu Bakar.
According to the charges, the elderly farmer is accused of murdering Wong Poh Soon, 61, Tran Thi Trang, a 37-year-old Vietnamese woman, and Chen Kwai Hwa, 64.
The offence is alleged to have taken place at a food outlet along Jalan Delima in Taman Kota Jaya at about 1.30pm on April 19.
Lim Lian is charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries the death penalty, or imprisonment of up to 40 years and, if not sentenced to death, whipping of not less than 12 strokes upon conviction.
Deputy public prosecutor Eizlan Azhar applied for a short mention date to facilitate the transfer of the case to the High Court for further proceedings.
Defence counsel Belinda Low, representing the accused, proposed May 13 as the next mention date.
