Man Dressed As Bruce Lee Jailed 6 Months, Fined RM7,200 For Nunchucks

Date:

A 59-year-old man in Singapore was sentenced to six months and two weeks in jail and fined S$2,000 (approximately RM7,200) after being found in possession of offensive weapons, including nunchucks.

According to Shin Min Daily News, Li Hongwei, who claimed to be a martial arts instructor and stage manager from China, was spotted in Geylang in 2025 dressed in a bright yellow tracksuit resembling the iconic outfit worn by the late martial artist Bruce Lee.

An Instagram video posted on Oct. 8, 2025, by Sgfollowsall showed Li standing on two bollards while swinging a pair of nunchucks. A bystander could be heard calling him “Singapore’s Bruce Lee” in Mandarin, while others laughed and clapped as he walked away.

Following the video, Singapore police patrolled the area and located Li at Geylang Lorong 18 on Oct. 12. Officers seized nunchucks, a five-pronged kunai (a type of Japanese knife), and knuckledusters.

Li faced two charges: one for violating the Firearms, Explosives and Weapons Control Act and another for possessing an offensive weapon. In court, Li said he was unfamiliar with Singapore’s laws and claimed the items were intended for teaching and martial arts performances.

The prosecution argued that the nunchucks are classified as a weapon and that Li did not hold a licence for them. They also noted that the kunai and knuckledusters could potentially cause harm or instill fear.

Li pleaded guilty to one charge and was sentenced to six months and two weeks in prison, in addition to a S$2,000 (RM7,200) fine.
