A viral video showing frozen meat being washed inside a public toilet in Ya’an, Sichuan province, has sparked widespread food safety concerns in China.
The footage shows a man wearing an apron placing several pieces of frozen pork into a sink inside a public restroom to wash them, while a woman appears to supervise nearby. The sink is believed to be used for cleaning mops, and is located directly beside a row of urinals, separated only by a partition.
The disturbing setting has triggered public outrage online, with many questioning hygiene standards and potential risks to food safety.
In response, the Food Safety Supervision Administration in Yucheng District, Ya’an, confirmed after an on-site inspection and investigation that the incident had indeed occurred.
Authorities said the vendor involved had violated food safety laws and posed a serious hygiene risk. The business has since been ordered to suspend operations for rectification.
Officials also confirmed that the meat products involved were removed and seized on-site for testing. The market management has been formally warned and instructed to strengthen food safety training and hygiene awareness among stallholders.
Authorities stressed that stricter oversight will be implemented to prevent similar incidents in future, as concerns over public health and food handling practices continue to grow.
