A motorcyclist has died following a collision with a lorry allegedly driven by a man under the influence of drugs in an incident along Jalan Permatang Gedong, Sungai Petani in Kedah on Wednesday night.
The accident occurred at approximately 8.30pm when the lorry, travelling from Taman Sejati, attempted to make a right turn. At the same time, the motorcyclist, who was riding straight from the opposite direction, crashed into the rear left tyre of the vehicle.
Kuala Muda district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hanyan Ramlan said the victim was thrown off the motorcycle due to the impact and was rushed to Hospital Sultan Abdul Halim (HSAH) for treatment.
“On Thursday at around 6.45am, we received information from the hospital’s Emergency Unit confirming that the victim had succumbed to injuries,” he said, underscoring the severity of the crash.
Further investigations revealed that the 53-year-old lorry driver tested positive for cannabis following a urine screening. Authorities have since detained the suspect to assist with ongoing investigations.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 44 of the Road Transport Act 1987, as police continue to probe the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
