Nine Witnesses Recorded In Ex-Bersatu Datuk Tan’s Johor Shooting Incident Probe

Date:

Police have recorded statements from nine witnesses to assist investigations into an incident involving former Johor Bersatu Associate Chief Datuk Tan Lek Khang, who is believed to have accidentally shot himself during a firearms training session at Ladang Rem shooting range on Tuesday.

Johor Police Chief Datuk Ab Rahaman Arsad said the witnesses include individuals present at the scene, such as a trainer, bodyguard, the victim’s 19-year-old stepson, and several acquaintances.

He said initial statements suggest the incident occurred while the victim was in the process of unloading a pistol after completing target practice.

Investigations are currently focused on determining whether standard operating procedures (SOP) for firearm handling and safety were properly followed, particularly during the unloading process.

Ab Rahaman also clarified that claims suggesting the victim was shot by another individual were inaccurate based on early witness accounts.

Preliminary findings indicate that no other party was involved, and the incident is believed to have resulted from negligence during firearm handling.

He added that there were no closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at the location, and investigators are reviewing compliance with safety procedures during the training session.

Police confirmed that the victim holds a valid firearm licence, and two pistols along with ammunition were seized to assist investigations.

The weapons involved include Sig Sauer and Masterpiece Arms pistols.

Authorities have urged the public not to speculate, as it may interfere with ongoing investigations.

The case is being investigated under Section 37 of the Arms Act 1960 for causing injury through firearm use without lawful justification, as well as Section 337 of the Penal Code for causing hurt by an act endangering life or personal safety.

The victim, aged 40, is reported to be in stable condition after undergoing surgery to remove a bullet from his left chest at Hospital Sultan Ismail in Johor Bahru.

Earlier reports stated that he was seriously injured after allegedly shooting himself at around 3.30pm during the training session.

He had previously resigned from Bersatu in February, citing loss of confidence in the party leadership.
