A Pakistani man believed to be acting as a transporter was arrested after authorities discovered 735 bottles and cans of suspected smuggled alcoholic beverages during an operation along the Alor Gajah–Melaka Tengah–Jasin (AMJ) Highway near Pegoh early yesterday morning.
Alor Gajah district police chief Superintendent Ahmad Abu Bakar said the arrest was made by officers from the district Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division during Op Motosikal, carried out at about 1.45am.
He said the Toyota Altis driven by the suspect was stopped after it was spotted behaving suspiciously while heading towards Melaka city.
“Upon inspection, police found 495 bottles and 240 cans of assorted alcoholic drinks believed to be untaxed, stored in boxes placed at the rear passenger seat and boot of the vehicle,” he said in a statement.
The 31-year-old driver, a Pakistani national, was arrested on the spot and the vehicle was seized for further investigation.
The suspect is currently remanded for 14 days until May 29 to assist investigations under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.
