The parents of a 13-year-old boy accused of fatally throwing a heavy object from a balcony in Naples are facing manslaughter charges over allegations they failed to properly supervise their child.
The case involves the death of Chiara Jaconis, 30, who was struck in the head by a 4.4lbs onyx figurine while walking through the Spanish Quarters of Naples with her boyfriend on September 15, 2024.
According to prosecutors at the Naples Public Prosecutor’s Office, the boy allegedly threw the object from a third-floor balcony. The impact caused severe head injuries, and Jaconis died two days later in hospital despite undergoing surgery.
Authorities argue the incident could have been prevented, claiming the parents failed in their duty of supervision. The central allegation is that the lack of oversight allowed the child to engage in dangerous behaviour.
The boy, who is under 14, was previously cleared by a juvenile court as Italian law prevents criminal responsibility at that age. However, prosecutors are now pursuing separate manslaughter charges against his parents.
Investigators also claimed the child may have been involved in similar risky behaviour in the past, strengthening concerns about supervision at home.
The parents deny all wrongdoing, insisting they had no involvement in the incident and stating that the object was not theirs. They are also challenging earlier rulings related to their son’s case.
A preliminary hearing at the Naples Court is scheduled for June 26, where a judge will decide whether the case will proceed to trial.
