Penang Worker Dies in 9-Meter Roof Fall During Solar Panel Cleaning

Date:

A subcontractor worker tragically died after falling from a 9.14-meter-high roof while cleaning solar panels at a factory here.

The Penang Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) confirmed in a statement today that the 21-year-old local man was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers from Sungai Bakap Hospital around 12:15 pm yesterday.

Following the incident, DOSH issued notices to the parties involved and ordered all work activities to be halted until corrective measures are implemented. Further investigations will be conducted at the site, and legal action may be taken if any violations of workplace safety laws are found.

DOSH emphasized that employers and contractors are fully responsible for ensuring safe work systems are provided, assessed, and strictly followed, especially for high-risk tasks. Failure to comply constitutes an offense under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514).

The department also stressed the seriousness of accidents involving work at heights, one of the leading causes of fatal workplace incidents, and reminded all industry players to implement proper safety measures, including secure anchorage points, ongoing safety training, and strict enforcement of safe work procedures.
