Police carried out two separate anti-narcotics operations on May 5, resulting in the arrest of two local men and the seizure of drugs worth more than RM7,500 in total.

In the first raid at about 4.45pm, the Kuching District Narcotics Crime Investigation Division raided a house in Kampung Sungai Midin, where officers discovered 39.90 grams of suspected cannabis valued at around RM927.

A 23-year-old local man was arrested at the scene, and a urine test showed he was positive for drugs. Police also confirmed that the suspect has no prior criminal record.

He has been remanded for four days until May 10 to assist investigations.

In a separate operation, the Sarawak Police Headquarters Narcotics Crime Investigation Division arrested a 35-year-old local man at about 12.55pm in the Batu area.

During the arrest, police seized 31.04 grams of suspected ketamine, 3.41 grams of cannabis, and 20.23 grams of ecstasy pills, with an estimated value of RM6,590.

The suspect also tested positive for drugs and is believed to have two prior criminal records. He has been remanded for two days until May 8 to assist investigations.

Kuching District Police Chief Alison Bunyau confirmed both arrests and said the operations were based on intelligence gathering and public information.

Police are investigating the first case under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a penalty of between two and five years’ imprisonment and whipping upon conviction.

The second case is being investigated under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which provides for life imprisonment or a minimum of five years’ jail, and at least 10 strokes of the cane if convicted.

Authorities stressed that they will not compromise on drug-related activities and credited the successful operations to intelligence efforts and public cooperation.

Police also urged the public to continue sharing information to help combat drug abuse, with hotlines made available for the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division.
