Police Hunt Rawang Motorcyclists After Firecracker Attack on JPJ Officers

Date:

Authorities are on the lookout for a group of motorcyclists believed to have hurled firecrackers at Road Transport Department (JPJ) personnel during an operation in Rawang on Saturday night.

Selangor Police Chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar confirmed that a report was filed at the Kundang Police Station in Gombak regarding the incident. “We are tracing the individuals involved. The case is being investigated under Section 6 of the Explosives Act 1957, concerning offences that could endanger life or property. Members of the public with information are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation,” he said.

The incident occurred around 10pm when JPJ officers were conducting a Chinese New Year patrol on Jalan Tasik Puteri and stopped a motorcycle for violations, including riding without helmets. Further checks revealed additional offences such as riding without a valid licence, expired road tax, and no insurance coverage. Summonses were issued to both rider and pillion passenger.

During the stop, a group estimated to be 20 to 30 motorcyclists reportedly threw firecrackers at the officers multiple times.

JPJ Selangor Director Azrin Borhan stressed the seriousness of the act, highlighting the danger posed to enforcement personnel and other road users. He added that JPJ will continue to conduct focused operations to enforce road safety laws, particularly targeting unlicensed riders, uninsured vehicles, and helmet violations.
