Public Advised to Avoid Beaches and Waterfalls During Northeast Monsoon

Date:

The public has been warned to steer clear of beaches and waterfalls during the northeast monsoon, as strong waves and sudden water surges pose serious risks to visitors.

Colonel (PA) Mohd Adzhar Mujib, director of the Civil Defence Force’s Disaster Management and Operations Division, urged parents not to bring children to such areas during this period.

“The combination of high waves at beaches and heavy rainfall at waterfalls significantly increases the risk of drowning and sudden water surges,” he said, citing several close calls that have already occurred this monsoon season.

Adzhar recalled a recent rescue in Kelantan, where Civil Defence personnel saved a boy from drowning at a beach in Bachok. The incident was spotted by an officer on duty at a lookout tower.

“To prevent similar tragedies, parents are strongly advised to avoid taking children to beaches or waterfalls during the monsoon,” he added.

He also warned social media users against spreading outdated or false flood content, including old videos and edited images. “Some individuals deliberately upload fake or old material, which forces agencies to verify information that isn’t current,” Adzhar said.

While sharing real-time updates can help authorities respond quickly, he stressed that accuracy must come first. “It is fine to share or go live from flood-affected areas, but ensure the content is genuine and not misleading,” he added.
