A professional cornhole player and quadruple amputee has been indicted on a first-degree murder charge in connection with a fatal shooting in Maryland.
Dayton Webber, 27, was arrested in late March following the death of Bradrick Michael Wells, who was shot while travelling in a vehicle in La Plata, Maryland, according to the Charles County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO).
Authorities allege that Webber shot Wells, who was seated in the front passenger seat, during an argument while driving. Investigators also claimed the suspect fled the scene with the victim still inside the vehicle before Wells’ body was later discovered in a nearby yard.
Webber was detained days later in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he was receiving treatment at a hospital for an unspecified medical issue. Police have not confirmed whether the condition was related to the incident.
He was later extradited to Maryland and appeared in court, where he was ordered to be held without bail. During a hearing, his defence attorney argued that Webber acted in self-defence, claiming he would have been killed if he had not responded during the confrontation.
On April 10, a grand jury indicted Webber on multiple charges, including first-degree murder, firearm-related offences, and reckless endangerment.
Prosecutors, however, allege that the killing occurred after an argument escalated inside the vehicle, citing witness statements from two passengers in the back seat who were present during the incident.
Following the indictment, Webber remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.
