Residents Evacuated After Landslide Hits Puncak Arabella Apartment in Cameron Highlands

Date:

A landslide near Block C of the Puncak Arabella Apartment in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands, on Friday (Nov 28) is believed to have been caused by continuous heavy rain, authorities said.

The Cameron Highlands District Disaster Management Committee (JPBD) confirmed that 91 residents from the 24 affected units have been instructed to move to a temporary relief centre at Puncak Arabella Hall.

Of those affected, 40 residents from eight households are currently at the relief centre, while 51 others from 16 households have relocated to relatives’ homes nearby. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. The incident occurred at approximately 8:45 pm.

The Department of Minerals and Geoscience (JMG) has conducted temporary slope-protection measures, with large-scale cleaning works planned once safety evaluations are complete. Evacuation of Block B, adjacent to Block C, will proceed in stages if the slope assessment deems it necessary.

The JPBD also reported that the Cameron Highlands District Council and the apartment’s concessionaire cleared the affected roads on the day of the landslide, and vehicle access was reopened on Saturday morning (Nov 29).

Authorities advised the public, particularly social media users, not to share unverified information, photos, or videos, warning that false reports could cause unnecessary public anxiety.
