Seven Arrested Over Fatal Songkran Assault As Police Tighten Festival Safety Measures

Date:

Police have arrested seven individuals in connection with the fatal assault of a 28-year-old man during Songkran celebrations, an incident that has shocked the local community.

Authorities confirmed that the group, aged between 20 and 35, were detained following investigations into the attack that occurred in front of Wat Si Saket along Prachak Silpakom Road in Nong Khai Municipality. The victim, identified as Mr Yosawat (surname withheld), later died from his injuries in hospital.

Police said the arrests were carried out after evidence was gathered linking the suspects to the violent incident, which took place during water festival celebrations. Senior officers from Nong Khai Provincial Police and Nong Khai City Police Station were involved in coordinating the operation.

According to investigators, the incident began from a verbal dispute that escalated into a physical confrontation amid crowded Songkran festivities, loud music, and alcohol consumption. Officers noted that miscommunication may have played a role in the escalation, ultimately leading to a deadly outcome.

Police added that further forensic examinations are being conducted to determine whether any weapons were used during the attack. Background checks revealed that some of the suspects have prior records, though they were not linked to organised gangs.

All seven suspects have been charged with jointly assaulting another person resulting in death. Authorities said they will oppose bail and have requested that the suspects be remanded in custody pending further proceedings at the Nong Khai Provincial Court.

One of the suspects, speaking during questioning, said he had no prior conflict with the victim and insisted the confrontation stemmed from a misunderstanding during the festivities. He also expressed regret over the incident and extended apologies to the victim’s family.

Police have since urged the public to celebrate responsibly during ongoing Songkran events, stressing that enforcement will be tightened to prevent further incidents and ensure public safety throughout the festival period.
