Pickup Truck Crashes Into Police Booth After Driver Falls Asleep, Causing Major Damage

Date:

A police guard post in Muang Thi District was severely damaged after a pickup truck crashed into the structure early Friday morning, in an incident believed to have been caused by driver fatigue.

Police said they received a report at around 7.30am on April 17, 2026, after a black Ford Ranger slammed into a police service point located at Ban Noi along Highway 226 (Surin–Sikhoraphum). Officers, together with rescue teams from the Muang Thi Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, rushed to the scene to assess the situation.

Upon arrival, authorities found the steel-roofed guard post partially collapsed, with extensive damage to the structure and surrounding property. A heavily damaged pickup truck was discovered lodged beneath the debris, its front end completely wrecked and airbags deployed.

The driver, a 43-year-old man identified as Mr Anan, sustained minor injuries and was given first aid at the scene before being sent to Surin Hospital for further treatment. Police confirmed that he was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver was travelling alone to his workplace in Sisaket when he reportedly fell asleep behind the wheel. He told officers he had been feeling drowsy and had also taken medication prior to the journey. A blood alcohol test later confirmed he was not under the influence of alcohol.

CCTV footage from the area showed the vehicle travelling at high speed before veering off the road, going airborne over a parked police vehicle, and crashing violently into the guard post. The impact caused widespread damage, including to police property, a patrol vehicle, a motorcycle, and computer equipment.

A police officer stationed at the scene said the incident occurred shortly after the service point had been closed for the night, following the conclusion of Songkran-related operations. He noted that officers had already left the area, avoiding what could have been a far more serious tragedy had personnel still been present.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the case, while the driver remains under medical care. Police said they will determine whether further legal action is required once his condition allows for a full statement.
