Taiwan’s fire department has revised the death toll from this week’s typhoon on the country’s remote east coast to 14, while 33 people remain missing. Authorities said the fatalities occurred after outer bands of Super Typhoon Ragasa dumped heavy rain on Hualien County, causing a barrier lake in the mountains to overflow and send a torrent of water through the small town of Guangfu.
Officials had initially reported 17 deaths but later adjusted the figure downward, explaining that some casualties had been counted twice. The number of people listed as missing also fell sharply from 152 on Wednesday to 33 as search and rescue teams worked to locate residents who had lost contact during the disaster.
