A police pursuit involving four undocumented migrants, including a 14-year-old, ended in a crash after their vehicle rammed into a streetlight pole before they were arrested in an incident here on Monday morning.
Shah Alam District Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Ramsay Embol said police received information at about 9.49am regarding a pursuit involving a grey Honda City being tracked by field unit SL542 from Dataran Otomobil, Section 15 towards the Section 15 roundabout.
Additional units were immediately deployed to assist in the chase, he said.
“The driver refused to stop despite repeated instructions from police, including the use of beacon lights, horn signals and loudspeaker announcements,” he said in a statement.
The suspect then drove recklessly at high speed, endangering other road users in the area, he added.
The pursuit ended when the vehicle lost control and crashed into a streetlight pole before stopping at a residential area in Jalan Ibus Dua 18/40B, Section 18, Shah Alam.
Upon inspection, police found three Indonesian men and one Indonesian woman inside the car. No illegal items were discovered in the vehicle.
Checks revealed that all four individuals, aged between 14 and 41, did not possess valid travel documents. Preliminary drug tests also showed that two of them tested positive for drugs.
Police have opened investigations under Sections 186 and 279 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants in the discharge of duties and reckless driving on public roads.
The case is also being investigated under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for being without valid travel documents.
If convicted under Section 186, offenders may face up to two years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both. Section 279 carries a penalty of up to six months’ jail, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both.
For immigration offences, offenders may face a fine of up to RM10,000, imprisonment of up to five years, and whipping of up to six strokes.
