Shock and disbelief gripped a grieving family in Maharashtra, India, when a 19-year-old car crash victim began moving and coughing during his own funeral.
The teen, identified as Bhau Lachke from Trimbakeshwar taluka, had sustained multiple severe injuries in a recent road accident and was rushed to a private hospital for treatment. According to relatives, doctors later informed them that he was in a “brain-dead” state with “almost no chance of survival.”
Heartbroken, the family began preparing his last rites. But just as the ceremony was about to start, Lachke stunned mourners by suddenly showing signs of life — first slight movements, then a few coughs. His relatives immediately rushed him back to hospital, where he is now in critical condition and on a ventilator.
The bizarre incident triggered outrage from Lachke’s family, who accused the hospital of misdiagnosis and misleading them into believing he was already gone. “We thought we had lost him, but this feels like a miracle. We just want him to get better,” said relative Gangaram Shinde.
In response, hospital managers suggested there may have been a misunderstanding. They stressed that while the patient was in a critical “brain-dead” state, no official death declaration had been made. “The term refers to the irreversible loss of brain function, but it does not mean clinical death,” a spokesperson explained, adding that the hospital is cooperating with an official inquiry.
The case remains under investigation, and it is unclear whether the family intends to pursue legal action.
News of Lachke’s apparent “resurrection” quickly went viral online, with many calling it a medical miracle. “This is unbelievable — a funeral means he was thought dead for days,” one user commented. Another wrote: “He clearly wasn’t meant to die yet. His mission here isn’t done.”
A third, however, joked: “The real question is… do they still have to pay for the funeral?”
