Terengganu Warns Tourists: No Swimming at Waterfalls During Monsoon School Holidays

Date:

Hotels and tourism operators in Terengganu have been instructed to brief guests and show safety videos highlighting monsoon-related hazards ahead of the upcoming school holidays.

Datuk Razali Idris, chairman of the State Tourism, Culture, Environment, and Climate Change Committee, warned that swimming and camping near waterfalls are strictly prohibited during the Northeast Monsoon due to life-threatening risks.

“With visitor numbers expected to surge during the school break, we urge the public to avoid swimming in the sea or at waterfalls because of potential water surges. For islands, we will follow the Marine Department’s guidance on safe access,” he said after launching the 2026 Terengganu Calendar of Events. State Tourism director Hilman Hajijan was also present.

Razali added that Terengganu welcomed 8.5 million tourists from January to November this year, surpassing its target of 6 million, with 7.2 million being domestic visitors.
