Three men, including a 14-year-old teenager, have been arrested in connection with the assault of a Sandakan Municipal Council (MPS) enforcement officer during a patrol at Batu 8 Market last Friday.
Sandakan District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner George Abd Rakman, confirmed that the suspects, all Filipino nationals, were detained at separate locations on Saturday following a police report filed by the victim.
“Based on the information received, the suspects were located and arrested at several sites, including Batu 8, Kampung Bariawa, and the squatter area of Kampung Melayu,” he said in a statement on Monday.
Drug tests conducted on all three individuals returned negative results. However, they have admitted to their involvement in the incident.
“The case is currently being investigated under Sections 186, 332, and 147 of the Penal Code,” George added.
The assault reportedly occurred after the enforcement officer cautioned a street vendor against selling cigarettes within the market area. A video of the incident circulated widely on social media, prompting authorities to conduct a thorough investigation.
Authorities continue to appeal for anyone with additional information to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.
