The affected areas include parts of Pahang (Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub), Johor (Segamat, Muar, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi, Johor Bahru), and Sarawak (Kuching, Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei, Sibu, Kapit, Bintulu, Miri, Limbang). In Sabah, the Interior districts (Sipitang, Tenom, Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Nabawan, Keningau), Tawau (Tawau, Kunak, Lahad Datu), and Sandakan (Kinabatangan) are also expected to be affected, along with Labuan.
MetMalaysia said the warning was issued after detecting signs of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall exceeding 20 millimeters per hour, which are expected to last for more than an hour.
The department explained that thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts, valid for no longer than six hours at a time.
Authorities urge the public to remain cautious, avoid risky outdoor activities, and stay updated on weather forecasts throughout the day.
