Tragic Death of Two-Year-Old Boy Prompts Dual Investigations in Sibu

Date:

Police have launched two separate investigations into the death of a two-year-old boy who is believed to have fallen into a roadside drain along Jalan Dr Wong Soon Kai on Monday night.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili stated that one investigation is being conducted under Section 3(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001, which covers neglect or exposing a child to circumstances likely to cause physical or emotional harm. The second investigation is classified as a sudden death report (SDR).

“Those found guilty under Section 3(1)(a) may face a fine of up to RM20,000, imprisonment for up to 10 years, or both,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Police were alerted to the incident by a medical officer at Sibu Hospital at 11:09 pm.

“The victim’s body was recovered from the drain by firefighters and brought to Sibu Hospital. Upon arrival at the Emergency Unit, the child was found wet, pale, and unresponsive, and was later confirmed dead,” Zulkipli added.

Investigations are ongoing to identify any responsible parties. The public with relevant information is urged to contact investigating officer ASP Mohd Adzmei Ahmad at 019-7192529 or visit the nearest police station.
