German Study Shows Two-Day High-Oat, Low-Calorie Diet Cuts Bad Cholesterol By 10%

Date:

A recent clinical trial conducted by a team from the University of Bonn in Germany has shown that patients with metabolic syndrome can experience rapid improvements in cholesterol levels and gut microbiota after just two days of a high-oat, low-calorie diet.

According to a report in Science Daily citing the latest study in Nature Communications, participants with metabolic syndrome—characterised by abnormal body weight and blood lipid levels—were instructed to consume up to 300 grams of oats per day while reducing their total daily caloric intake by 50% for 48 hours. The results were striking: low-density lipoprotein (LDL), commonly known as “bad cholesterol,” dropped by 10%, and participants lost an average of 2 kilograms. Notably, the lipid-lowering effects persisted for up to six weeks after the trial ended.

Researchers explained that this rapid effect is linked to changes in gut bacteria. The short-term, high-oat intake caused specific beneficial bacteria to proliferate, producing metabolites such as ferulic acid. These compounds enter the bloodstream and help regulate cholesterol metabolism throughout the body. The study noted that a regular intake of 80 grams of oats per day without caloric restriction did not produce significant lipid-lowering effects, highlighting that short-term, intensive dietary “shock” is required to reset gut microbiota balance.

While the findings suggest that extreme dietary interventions may offer a potential tool for short-term cholesterol management, the research team strongly cautioned that this approach was performed under strict medical supervision. They warned the public and patients with chronic conditions against attempting to replicate the diet at home, as it could cause nutritional imbalances.

Anyone considering this method should consult a healthcare professional, and the approach is not a substitute for standard cholesterol-lowering medications.
