Poor Posture From Smartphones Driving Neck Hump Cases In Youth, Say Specialists

Date:

A growing number of young working adults are reporting a visible hump forming at the back of their neck, commonly referred to as a “dowager’s hump” or “buffalo hump”, a condition that specialists say is increasingly linked to prolonged poor posture rather than ageing.

Despite its local nickname suggesting wealth or prosperity, experts stress that the condition has nothing to do with affluence. Instead, it often reflects long-term strain on the spine caused by habits such as excessive smartphone use and prolonged computer work.

Medical explanations indicate that the human neck naturally maintains a slight forward curve to support the weight of the head. However, frequent forward head posture significantly increases pressure on the cervical spine. Over time, this leads to muscle tightness, reduced blood flow, tissue inflammation and compensatory fat or connective tissue build-up at the lower neck and upper back area.

While rare cases may be linked to medical conditions such as bone disorders, tumours or hormonal issues, specialists say the vast majority are caused by lifestyle-related posture problems. The condition is now increasingly observed among younger individuals, reflecting changing work and digital habits.

Symptoms often go beyond appearance, with many sufferers reporting chronic neck and shoulder stiffness, upper back pain, headaches, dizziness, and in more severe cases, numbness in the arms or reduced grip strength. If left uncorrected, it may progress into more serious spinal curvature issues.

Health professionals emphasise that early intervention can significantly improve the condition. Treatment typically focuses on posture correction, spinal alignment and strengthening of supporting muscles.

To help address the issue, fitness instructors recommend simple corrective stretches that open up the chest and improve upper back flexibility. These include interlocking the hands behind the back to stretch the shoulders, a yoga-style shoulder bind to improve mobility, and gentle floor-based twisting movements to release tension in the upper spine.

Experts also caution that individuals experiencing persistent symptoms should seek professional assessment. While the condition is reversible in many early cases, continued neglect may lead to long-term spinal complications.

Doctors further advise reducing prolonged device usage and maintaining an upright posture during daily activities. They stress that small lifestyle adjustments today can help prevent chronic pain and spinal issues in the future.
